Geoffrey Canada is nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform.  Canada is founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ), which The New York Times Magazine called “one of the most ambitious social experiments of our time.” The work of Canada and HCZ has become a national model and has been the subject of many profiles in the media and scholarly circles.  The New York Times Magazine said the Zone Project “combines educational, social, and medical services that starts at birth and follows children to college… to create a safety net woven so tightly that children in the neighborhood just can’t slip through.”

Designers and educators across the country are re-envisioning the way we create modern educational spaces to put community access and human interaction at the forefront of design.  Leaders discuss how we build spaces – -physical and beyond – -to inspire creativity, caring, and community.

Successful author and education pioneer, Geoffrey Canada wants to change the lives of inner-city kids, prevent youth violence and foster community development – all at the same time.  And it’s working.  Join us as we engage with Mr. Canada on a timely conversation on K-12 schools in our community and beyond.

Youth Development: 2:00pm - 4:00pm

National and local leaders share experiences and ideas to support the mind, body, and soul of youth.  Moderated by Harris Ambush, University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

 

 

Youth Skate & Bike Jam: 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Immediately following our youth development discussion, join us on the street as we connect with youth for a professional skate and bike show sponsored by the St. Petersburg Police Department, Jannus Live, and the Hyatt Place Downtown.  FREE to all—held in front of Jannus Live and the Hyatt.
